December is often a month full of surprises. The month started mild, went cold, and finished with more than a week of mild weather.
We started herbs indoors, harvested some pepper plants, and started seeds on frozen garden beds. Besides winter sowing cold-hardy greens, we also planted a batch of hardneck Morado garlic cloves for late spring harvest..
On a sad note, I lost a Bhut Jolokia ghost pepper plant to freezing temperatures that took me entirely by surprise.
And finally, the time has come for me to stop using peat moss as a soil amendment in our garden. The decision was taken a while back, but I have used what I purchased a couple of years ago as I buy soil amendments in bulk. But now I am down to my last block—so hello, 2023, and more sustainable and renewable soil amendment alternatives.
